Preterm Labor: Signs and First Aid

Preterm labor can happen in any pregnancy, sometimes for no known reasons. Actually, this happens to me in my second pregnancy. This usually occurs when the body starts getting ready for birth too early due to uterine contractions that cause the cervix to open earlier than the normal or before 37 weeks of pregnancy.

Preterm labor can lead to preterm birth, which puts babies at a greater risk of low birth weight, breathing and digestive difficulties and other long-term mental and physical disabilities. Worst to happen, it will cause to baby’s short life on earth. Listed below are preterm labor signs and first aid things to do.

Signs of Preterm Labor

  • Increased vaginal discharge
  • Abdominal pain, menstrual-like cramping
  • Dull or rhythmic low back pain
  • Clear, pink or brownish fluid leaking from your vagina
  • Vaginal bleeding or spotting
  • More than 4 contractions in an hour (even if they do now hurt)
  • More pressure in the pelvic area (a feeling that your baby is pushing down)

If you can feel one or more of the signs mentioned above, do the first aid preterm labor listed below:

  • Relax by doing inhale exhale
  • Drink 2 to 3 glasses of water of juice to counteract dehydration that stimulates uterine contractions
  • Sideways bed rest. Lie down sideways to your left for about one hour to promote uterine flow
  • Observe your contractions. If it occurs more than 4 in an hour don’t waste any single seconds, call your Ob-Gyn or head right away to the hospital nearest your location.

I’m expectant mom and baby will be out by July, I just want to remind fellow mom’s that even if you feel fine in your pregnancy, a regular visit to an Ob-Gyn, maintaining a healthy lifestyle plus proper nutrition are great factors to help reduce the risk of preterm labor.

I don’t recall experiencing preterm labor. I had a very quick real labor which only lasted for about 4-5 hours. That results in heavy bleeding and by God’s grace, I survived.

Pre-term labor sounds so scary, preggnant mums ought to be on the look out for those signs. I was fortunate to never experience this during my pregnancy, in fact, I did not experience any labor at all! 🙂

In all my four pregnancies, I experienced preterm labor. Kaya I was asked to take a bed rest during my first trimester and took duphaston and duvadillan even on my second and third trimester. I even had a missed abortion for my fifth. Such delicate condition.

This post is helpful for moms and even to their husbands. Gives us a look of how preterm labor can be.
