Best Tips For Healing After a C-Section

Six years ago today, I delivered my third child thru a C-Section. She is now 6 years old growing healthy and cheerful.

Whether your c-section is planned or unplanned, it’s likely that you already know that recovery time is important. What you do during your recovery could be the difference between a slow recovery and a quick one. C-section recovery often takes a lot longer than recovery from a natural birth because it involves major surgery.

If you want to get back on your feet as quickly as possible, here are some of the best tips.

Physical Activity

Although you’ll need to rest completely for at least twenty-four hours after surgery, it can help to start moving around as soon as possible. You’ll need to take your time and move slowly but any movement is better than none. Sit and rest when you need to and take plenty of time to bond with your new baby.

You may need some help getting in and out of the shower but standing in the shower can help you to regain your strength. You’ll find that laughing and coughing may cause some pulling or discomfort near your incision. It can help ease pain if you hold a cushion to your incision when you need to cough or laugh.

Look After Your Incision

It’s easier said than done to monitor the healing progress on your incision. You may not be able to see it immediately after giving birth. Your health professional should check your incision during the first weeks of healing.

You can also use a handheld mirror to monitor it yourself. Look for signs of bleeding or inflammation. In the months after your c-section, you may notice keloids from the scarring. In the event this happens you should choose the best treatment for keloids by seeking professional advice.

Eating and Drinking

As the parent of a newborn, it’s essential that you keep your strength and energy up by eating well. Drinking plenty of water is also a great way to give your body what it needs to heal quickly. Women who have had c-sections will often find themselves constipated after surgery.

Bowel movements can be painful after this type of surgery so constipation is a natural response. Eating plenty of fiber rich foods to help combat the symptoms of constipation. You can also use a fiber supplement if you need to.

Don’t Over Do It

Life is busy and it’s tempting to try and get back into the swing of things as quickly as possible. However, there are certain rules you should stick to after having major surgery. For instance, your doctor may recommend that you stop driving for six weeks after surgery.

It’s also advised that women who have had a c-section avoid lifting anything heavier than their newborn and avoid walking for long periods or up steep hills. Sticking to these recommendations will help your body to heal as quickly as it can.

I found it the hardest to take it slow after c-section. I am a very active person and moving less hit very hard. People also don’t usually talk about it but going to the bathroom supervised does not feel great. My doctor pointed out that diet is of outmost importance during the recovery period. Who long did it take you? I made a first short walk after around 10 days after opration, been moving around more or less normal after 3 weeks and returned to sport (well, short and easy but normal workouts) after 6 weeks.
