This usually occurs when the body starts getting ready for birth too early due to uterine contractions that cause the cervix to open earlier than the normal or before 37 weeks of pregnancy.

Preterm labor can lead to preterm birth, which puts babies at a greater risk of low birth weight, breathing and digestive difficulties and other long-term mental and physical disabilities.
